paṭṭaǹ Tdbh., ഭട്ടന്, A class of foreign Brahmans, often traders, of old used as inviolable messengers, spies, etc. with പശ്ചിമശിഖ, hence less respected & object of many proverbs, f.i. ഊട്ടു കേട്ട പട്ടര്, പട്ടര് തൊട്ട പെണ്ണു etc.; ഒരു കള്ളപ്പട്ടരെ അയച്ചു TR. a spy of Brahman. ഒരു പട്ടരശ്ശന് (hon.) jud.; pl. പട്ടന്മാര്. Kinds: കടുപ്പട്ടര് (lowered for eating the fish കടു?) a Sūdra-like class, living by science, & as carriers, embalers, etc. — കുട്ടിപ്പട്ടര് Brahmans attending on Rājas. — ചോഴിയപ്പ. or ആര്യപ്പ. (with forelock) ranking with Kšatriyas, also മുക്കാണിയര്. — നാട്ടു പ. children of a foreign Br. from a Nambūri wife.
