stands for ഛ (ചായം), ജ (ചലം), ഝ (ച ടിതി), ശ (ചാത്തം fr. ശ്രാ., ചാക്യാര്‍ fr. ശ്ലാ.), ഷ (ചടങ്ങു), സ (ചേകവന്‍), (നച്ചിയം); ക്ഷ (ചാരം,തച്ചന്‍), even for ദ്യ (ചൂതു) and യ (ചോ നകന്‍) & dialectically ര (രാ —in TP. ചാ —). Palatal vowels may change a dental into ച (തെള്ളു —, ചെള്ളു; പരിതു— പരിചു, as in grammar കടിച്ചു from കടിത്തു),, or lead to the dropping of an initial ച(ചിറകു— ഇറകു; ചേട്ട— ഏട്ട). Old ച is also found lapsing into ശ (അര ചു— അരശു, പുതുച്ചേരി— ശ്ശേരി and സ (ഉ രുസുക, തുറസ്സ്). For etymological researches this is perhaps the most difficult letter. (In C. & Tu. ക represents frequently initial ച,, as ചെവി—കിവി; ചേരം— കേരളം.

čura T. M. (C. സൊ —, fr. ചുരു round) 1. Pumpkin, water-gourd ചുരവള്ളി, ചുരത്ത ണ്ടു med. MM. GP.; ചുരക്കായി V1., ചുരങ്ങ the fruit, used as vessel by toddy-drawers (also ചുരത്തൊണ്ട് No., ചുരപ്പാത്രം, ചുരക്കുടുക്ക V1.). — ചുരപത്രം GP 65. the leaf, also ചുരങ്ങയില. — Kinds: കാട്ടു — also കൈപ്പച്ചുര, from the gourd of which the ചിരപ്പക്കുററി is made — കാട്ടുചു രങ്ങ തീര്‍ത്ഥത്തില്‍ മുക്കിയവന്‍ N. pr., a low caste sage. നാട്ടു — Cucurbita lagenaria, the gourd serves as drinking vessel (ചുരങ്ങാത്തൊണ്ടു); പാല്‍ച്ചുരങ്ങ (കുത്തി ഉണക്കി a med.); പേച്ചുര a bitter gourd (S. കടുതുംബി). 2. a female screw; the part of an instrument which receives the handle, So. (see ചുറ). 3. (T. cow's udder) giving milk. ചു. കെട്ടുക to prevent the milk from flowing (by charms). ചു. വലിക്ക to withhold it.

čambu (Tu. rotten, see ചമ്മി) Leavings, refuse = ചപ്പ്; in So. also a carcass B. ചന്പാടന്‍ N. pr. in ച. വഴക്കു prov.

čūrṇam S. (√ ചര്‍വ്) 1. Powder ചൂ' മായരക്കന്‍ വീഴ്ന്താന്‍ RC. 2. med. powder. ദോ ഷചൂ. Mud. a poison. denV. ചൂര്‍ണ്ണിക്ക, ചൂര്‍ണ്ണീകരിക്ക to pulverize. part. ചൂര്‍ണ്ണിതം powdered, crumbled.

čaral (C. ചട്ടു, C. Te. ഗരസു) Gravel, also ചരക്കല്ല്. അവര്‍ക്കു രത്നം ചരക്കല്ലുപോലെ Si Pu. ചരക്കല്ലുകള്‍ വര്‍ഷിക്കുന്നു Bhg. in a whirlwind.—coarse sand ചരലില്‍ കിടന്നു RS. slept on the ground. ചരല്‍വഴി gravel path.
