stands for ഛ (ചായം), ജ (ചലം), ഝ (ച ടിതി), ശ (ചാത്തം fr. ശ്രാ., ചാക്യാര്‍ fr. ശ്ലാ.), ഷ (ചടങ്ങു), സ (ചേകവന്‍), (നച്ചിയം); ക്ഷ (ചാരം,തച്ചന്‍), even for ദ്യ (ചൂതു) and യ (ചോ നകന്‍) & dialectically ര (രാ —in TP. ചാ —). Palatal vowels may change a dental into ച (തെള്ളു —, ചെള്ളു; പരിതു— പരിചു, as in grammar കടിച്ചു from കടിത്തു),, or lead to the dropping of an initial ച(ചിറകു— ഇറകു; ചേട്ട— ഏട്ട). Old ച is also found lapsing into ശ (അര ചു— അരശു, പുതുച്ചേരി— ശ്ശേരി and സ (ഉ രുസുക, തുറസ്സ്). For etymological researches this is perhaps the most difficult letter. (In C. & Tu. ക represents frequently initial ച,, as ചെവി—കിവി; ചേരം— കേരളം.

čuma (Tu. C. കെമ്മു, T. ചെരുമ) Congh, hem ഏക്കവും ചുമയും പെരുതായി മരിക്കും MM. വാതച്ചുമെക്കു പുകെപ്പാന്‍ മരുന്നു a med. denV. ചുമെക്ക to cough, നെഞ്ഞു നോം ചുമെ ക്കും a med. II.

Inf. of ചാലു (T. C. Te. to be full, sufficient, Tu. & C. also സലെ) 1. Richly, fully; ചാലവരുത്തവന്‍ വാഞ്ഛിതം, ചാല ജ്വ ലിച്ചു, ഞാന്‍ ചാലപ്പറയുന്പോള്‍ ആയുസ്സു പോ രാ Bhr. = ഏറ. 2. also softly, gently ബാലക നെ ചാല നല്കി CG. = willingly; also straight on V1. (as if from ചാല്‍). Often ചാലവേ, ചാ ലവും.
