čāttaǹ T. M. (Tdbh., ശാസ്താ) 1. A demon കുട്ടിച്ചാത്തന്‍, കരിയാത്തന്‍ etc. = ഭൈ രവന്‍; ചാത്തന്മാര്‍ goblins (390 in all). 2. N. pr. men. 3. cock കോഴിച്ചാത്തന്‍ MC., ഇരു വാല്‍ചാത്തന്‍, ഓലച്ചാത്തന്‍, വാവിട്ടച്ചാത്തന്‍ (= ചകോരം) different birds (prh. ചാതകം ?).

stands for ഛ (ചായം), ജ (ചലം), ഝ (ച ടിതി), ശ (ചാത്തം fr. ശ്രാ., ചാക്യാര്‍ fr. ശ്ലാ.), ഷ (ചടങ്ങു), സ (ചേകവന്‍), (നച്ചിയം); ക്ഷ (ചാരം,തച്ചന്‍), even for ദ്യ (ചൂതു) and യ (ചോ നകന്‍) & dialectically ര (രാ —in TP. ചാ —). Palatal vowels may change a dental into ച (തെള്ളു —, ചെള്ളു; പരിതു— പരിചു, as in grammar കടിച്ചു from കടിത്തു),, or lead to the dropping of an initial ച(ചിറകു— ഇറകു; ചേട്ട— ഏട്ട). Old ച is also found lapsing into ശ (അര ചു— അരശു, പുതുച്ചേരി— ശ്ശേരി and സ (ഉ രുസുക, തുറസ്സ്). For etymological researches this is perhaps the most difficult letter. (In C. & Tu. ക represents frequently initial ച,, as ചെവി—കിവി; ചേരം— കേരളം.

čil S. 1. (to mind) Mind, intelligence, also ചിത്തു; esp. in comp. ചിഛ്ശക്തി KeiN.— അവി ദ്യാരൂപത്തിലേ ചിഛ്ശായയല്ലോ ജീവന്‍ KeiN. has only the appearance of mind. — നിന്‍റെ ചിത്തകതാരിങ്കല്‍ KR., VCh.— ചില്‍ഘനനാ യോനെ വാഴ്ത്തി CG. who is solid mind, nothing but mind = ചിന്മാത്രന്‍; (നിത്യാഭ്യാസ ത്തില്‍ ഏവം ചിന്മാത്രനായിവരും KeiN. mere spirit); so ചില്‍പുമാന്‍, ചിന്മയന്‍, ചില്‍സ്വ രൂപന്‍ AR. of Vishṇu, ചില്ക്കാതല്‍ RS. 2. S. ചിദ് (ച + ഇദ്) also, event in കിഞ്ചില്‍ etc.

čabalam S. (√ കന്പ്) Shaking, agile, fickle, inconstant. ചപലന്‍ lightminded, ചപല a wanton. ചപലതകള്‍ ഉണ്ടാം ChVr. deviations from rectitude ച. കള്‍ ചൊല്ലി Bhg.

čeṇgam (Tdbh., ജംഘ ?) ചെങ്കങ്ങള്‍ എന്നു ൨ മര്‍മ്മം — നെററിയുടെ അറുതിക്കു ചെ വിക്കു നേരേ അവിടേ മുറിഞ്ഞാല്‍ അപ്പോഴേ മരിക്കും MM. (ചെം): ചെങ്കണ്ണു Sore eyes, ophthalmia, also ചെങ്കങ്കണ്ണു (see കുങ്കന്പുണ്ണു) a med. ചെങ്കതിരോന്‍ the sun. ചെ. മകന്‍ Karṇa, Bhr. ചെങ്കനകക്കൊടി Bhr 7.
