puḷ T. M. (Te. pulugu). 1. Any small bird പുള്ളും പിറാവും വെടിവെച്ചു TP., esp. വ ണ്ണാത്തിപ്പുള്‍ Leucocerca; also hawk MC. (=

pu/?/u T. M. C. (Te. puruvu, Tu. C. puri fr. puru Tu. small). 1. A worm, grub, mite, vu. പുശു — Kinds: ഓല —, കുട —, കന്പിളി —, അരി —, തേക്കന്‍ —, തൊപ്പപ്പുഴു etc. 2. silk- worm (പട്ടുപു.). 3. see പുഴുകു. I. പുഴുക്ക, ത്തു T. M. C. (huḷu, C. Te. pučču, Tu. puringu) To be eaten or infected by worms, putrify, rot കാലും കയ്യും പുഴുത്ത ദുര്‍ഗ്ഗ ന്ധവും SiPu. (of leprosy). അരിഞ്ഞു കളഞ്ഞു കാച്ചൂതും ചെയ്ക എന്നാല്‍ പു. യില്ല a. med. (cancer). പുഴുത്തു പോക; പുഴുത്ത (vu. പുയി ത്തി) നായി vu. No. (abuse) etc. VN. പുഴുപ്പു being worm-eaten; rottenness. പുഴുക്കടി a skin-disease, chiefly one produced by the first rains, വിഷവെള്ളത്താലേ കാ ല്ക്ക പുണ്ണുണ്ടാകുന്ന പു.; also ringworm കുള ന്പില്‍ പു. കടിച്ചു TP. of a bull, see തല ച്ചൊറി 394. പുഴുക്കടിക്കായി fruit of an Asclepias, employed to counteract it. പുഴുക്കരണം a time in each fortnight, unfavorable to sowing (astrol.) പുഴുക്കുത്തു canker, the damage trees suffer from worms, caterpillars, etc. പുഴുക്കുത്തുക, പുഴക്കേടു. പുഴുക്കൂടു a worm's nest, (of പച്ചപ്പുഴ used as bag for പുതുപ്പണം), a cocoon. പുഴുക്കൊത്തി the hoopoe. പുഴുക്കൊല്ലി a vermifuge Justicia nasuta, Rh. (Aristolochia T.) പുഴുത്തീനി the fly-catcher MC. പുഴുത്തുള worm-bite, ആമാടെക്കു പു. നോക്കേ ണ്ട prov. don't find fault with. പുഴുനൂല്‍ raw silk. പുഴുപ്പല്ലു rotten tooth. പുഴുപ്പല്ലന്‍ m., — പ്പല്ലി f. having decayed teeth.

pūnduγa So. (fr. പൂഴു). To sink in the ground, വിശിഖം പൂന്തി ChS. പൂത്തു, കുഴിപ്പൂത്തു So. a grave. v. a. പൂത്തുക (പൂഴ്ത്തുക) 1. to press into ചവിട്ടിച്ചളി യില്‍ പൂത്തും MR. (a threat). മുട്ട എഴു തി നെല്ലില്‍ പൂ a kind of charm; suspected persons must take a certain egg out of a heap of rice, when the thief will be detected. ചക്രം എഴുതി ധനുമ്മേല്‍ പൂത്തേക്ക Mantr. തീയില്‍കൊണ്ട കായി പൂത്തി (to cook it). 2. to bury ശവം എത്ര ആഴം കുഴിച്ചിട്ടു പൂ ത്തിയതു jud. — also met. നേരിനേ പൂത്തു, ക ളവു പൂത്തു (vu. — ത്തി) പറഞ്ഞു = മറെച്ചു. (പൂ:) പൂന്തുകില്‍ a fine flowered cloth മഞ്ഞപ്പൂ' ലും Bhr. (of K/?/šṇa's), Pay. പൂന്തുറ N. pr. the original abode of the ancestors of Tāmūri (ഏറാടിമാര്‍), who thence is called കോഴിക്കോട്ടു പൂന്തുറക്കോന്‍ KU. പൂന്തേങ്ങ B. the bulbous root of lotus.

Common, general. പൊതുമുതല്‍ common property. പൊ തുവായിട്ടു വെച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ധര്‍മ്മം VyM. a universal law. പൊതു പിരിക്ക V1. to be solitary. പൊതുവിലുളള B. catholic. പൊതുവന്‍ So. a barber; No. പൊതുവാന്‍ the barber of Paravaǹ & Kammāḷars; his wife പൊതുവാടിച്ചി. പൊതുവാള്‍ (ആള്‍), pl. — വാന്മാര്‍ & — വാളര്‍, — വാളന്മാര്‍, fem. — ളിച്ചി (& പാര്‍വ്വതിപ്പൊ ‍ തുവാടിശ്യാര് MR.) a class of half-Brahmans, temple-servants. — അകപ്പൊതുവാള്‍ (with പൂ ണുനൂല്‍) who officiate as priests & administrators of temple-property; also as menials (sweepers in Coch.). In Talip. only 35. — പുറപ്പൊതുവാള്‍ (in Talip. 1770) have no Brahm. thread, are ക്ഷേത്രപരിപാലകര്‍, cultivate science. — നായര്‍ പൊതുവാള്‍ (in Talip. 63); also മാരയാന്‍ പൊ. have to sweep. പൊതുവേ in common, universally. പൊ. ഉളള തിന്നു ചേതം വരുത്താതേ VyM. joint-stock. — also പൊതേ V1.

poδi T. M. C. (Tu. pude, see പുത). 1. A bundle, as of victuals; whatever envelopes കല ത്തിന്നു വായ്പൊതി കെട്ടുക a. med. 2. a full bag or bullock-load. പൊതി പിടിക്ക to be carried on beasts of burthen. ഇരുനൂറു പൊതി പുക യിലയും കച്ചയും TR. 3. a measure = 20 Iḍanga/?/i CS. ഒരു പൊതി അരി = മൂട (vu.). പൊതി നെല്ലു = 25 Iḍ. V1. (50 No.) ഒരു പൊതി ക്കു മുപ്പതു വിത്തു (Cavāi) others = 33½ Iḍang. അരിപ്പൊതി Arb.; also a number: 1 പൊതിച്ച ക്കര Cann. 100, Telly. 50, Cal. 10 pieces. പൊതിക്കാരന്‍ an owner of pack-bullocks. പൊതിക്കാള an ox of burthen. പൊതിക്കെട്ടു a bundle tied up ചോറു പൊ'ട്ടാ യി കെട്ടുന്നു TP. പൊതിച്ചോറു rice or victuals tied up for a journey ഒരു മുണ്ടില്‍ തൈര്‍ ഒഴിച്ചു പൊ. കെട്ടി Arb. പൊതിനാവു mint, Arb. Palg. (see പോതിക). പൊതിപ്പത്തു or പോററിപ്പത്തു a tenth of the seed-corn formerly paid to temples, but merged in the general assessment. W. പൊതിപ്പാടു a measure of rice-land requiring a Poδi of seed to sow it. എനിക്കു സ്വന്ത മായി ൬ പൊ. കണ്ടം ൧൨ പൊ. പണയം വക കണ്ടങ്ങള്‍ കൂടിയിരിക്കുന്നു (Becal). പൊതിമാടു Palg. = പൊതിക്കാള.

peṭṭu 1. adv. part. (പെടുക). Getting into a direction, towards കീഴപെട്ടു തല്ലുവാന്‍ ഓങ്ങി യ നേരത്തു മേല്പെട്ടു പോയതു CG.; often വട്ടു, ഓട്ടു & treated as a noun, f. i. തെക്കോട്ടേക്ക് ഒഴുകും Bhg. 2. പെട്ടെന്നു പെട്ടന്നു suddenly, unexpectedly: either like the sound of having fallen, or from C. Te. Tu. പെട്ടു a blow, slap (in T. വെട്ടന violently).
