Initial വ is sometimes the result of a lost ഉ (വാദ്ധ്യാന്‍, വാവു), sometimes it slides into ഒ (ഒല്ലാ = വല്ലാ, വണ്ണം, ശിവപുരം, ചോവരം); in composition it can be lost (വേണം, വരിക, വിടുക), or becomes യ (നെടുവിരിപ്പു, നെടിയിരിപ്പു). In several words it passes into ക (ചുവന്ന, ചുകന്ന; ചേ കം fr. സേവ) & vice versa (രാകുക, രാവുക). Of old it served to keep vowels asunder (അ വന്‍ = a + aǹ, അവിടേ, മിക്കവാറു).
