čāyam (Tdbh., ഛായം) Colour, dye, paint. — ചാ. കയെററുക to dye, paint. ച. കാച്ചുക, മുക്കുക to dye, & ചായത്തില്‍ മുക്കി. ചായക്കാരന്‍ a dyer. ചായത്തൈലം & പച്ചച്ചാ. lemon grass-oil. ചായപ്പുടവ dyed or coloured garment. ചായവേര്‍ the Chayroot, Oldenlandia umbellata.

čāḍi T. M. C. (Tu. ജ —) A jar, urn (Port. jarra?).—also = ശാടി a petticoat of Cheṭṭichis. I.

stands for ഛ (ചായം), ജ (ചലം), ഝ (ച ടിതി), ശ (ചാത്തം fr. ശ്രാ., ചാക്യാര്‍ fr. ശ്ലാ.), ഷ (ചടങ്ങു), സ (ചേകവന്‍), (നച്ചിയം); ക്ഷ (ചാരം,തച്ചന്‍), even for ദ്യ (ചൂതു) and യ (ചോ നകന്‍) & dialectically ര (രാ —in TP. ചാ —). Palatal vowels may change a dental into ച (തെള്ളു —, ചെള്ളു; പരിതു— പരിചു, as in grammar കടിച്ചു from കടിത്തു),, or lead to the dropping of an initial ച(ചിറകു— ഇറകു; ചേട്ട— ഏട്ട). Old ച is also found lapsing into ശ (അര ചു— അരശു, പുതുച്ചേരി— ശ്ശേരി and സ (ഉ രുസുക, തുറസ്സ്). For etymological researches this is perhaps the most difficult letter. (In C. & Tu. ക represents frequently initial ച,, as ചെവി—കിവി; ചേരം— കേരളം.

čāru S. (L. earns) Dear, lovely ചാരുരൂ പാമൃതം Nal. — ചാരുസ്തനങ്ങള്‍ Bhg. — ചാരു സ്മിതം etc. — ചാരുഹാസം sprightliness. ചാരുത്വം, ചാരുത loveliness ചാ.കലര്‍ന്നനീ Bhr.

čīttal (T. ചീക്കു sweepings, see ചീ പ്പു Comb of pepper berries (കോച്ചിലോടുള്ള മുളകു). ചീന No. A large river-boat = വള്ളം see ചീനു.

T.M. A load, burden (= കെട്ടു), ചുമക്കാര്‍ TR. carriers, porters. ചുമടു 1. id. തലച്ചുമടു a headload. ചു. എടുക്ക, ഇറക്ക, കയററിക്കൊടുക്ക etc. മൂട ചുമടായി കെട്ടുക, പൊന്ന് ഒക്കച്ചോടാക്കി കെട്ടിക്കു ന്നു TP. made into Cooly-loads. — ചുമടു താ ങ്ങി a porter's rest B. = അത്താണി. 2. = ചു വടു TP. ചുമട്ടാള്‍, ചുമട്ടുകാരന്‍ a carrier (ചോട്ടാളരെ കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടു TP.); ചുമട്ടുകൂലി his hire. ചുമതല responsibility, charge, obligation നമ്മു ടെ കൈക്കു ചു. ആയി TR. I have to answer for it. ചു. ക്കാരന്‍ accountable person (manager ചുമതലായിട്ടു വിചാരിക്കുന്നവന്‍ VyM.) ചുമനില id. നമുക്കു പിന്നേ ചു. ഇല്ല TR. no responsibility; no balance against me. ചുമക്ക, ന്നു T.M. (Te. mōču) to carry a burden, കനത്തതു ചുമപ്പൂലും Nid. to bear (= എടു ക്ക); to endure. — VN. ചുമപ്പു a load V1. CV. I. ചുമത്തുക 1. to lay a burden on, to load. 2. to charge, impute (with കുററം = ദോഷാ രോപണം to condemn). II. ചുമപ്പിക്ക V1. to make to carry. ചുമല്‍ T. M.
