stands for ഛ (ചായം), ജ (ചലം), ഝ (ച ടിതി), ശ (ചാത്തം fr. ശ്രാ., ചാക്യാര്‍ fr. ശ്ലാ.), ഷ (ചടങ്ങു), സ (ചേകവന്‍), (നച്ചിയം); ക്ഷ (ചാരം,തച്ചന്‍), even for ദ്യ (ചൂതു) and യ (ചോ നകന്‍) & dialectically ര (രാ —in TP. ചാ —). Palatal vowels may change a dental into ച (തെള്ളു —, ചെള്ളു; പരിതു— പരിചു, as in grammar കടിച്ചു from കടിത്തു),, or lead to the dropping of an initial ച(ചിറകു— ഇറകു; ചേട്ട— ഏട്ട). Old ച is also found lapsing into ശ (അര ചു— അരശു, പുതുച്ചേരി— ശ്ശേരി and സ (ഉ രുസുക, തുറസ്സ്). For etymological researches this is perhaps the most difficult letter. (In C. & Tu. ക represents frequently initial ച,, as ചെവി—കിവി; ചേരം— കേരളം.

tṛδīyam S. (ത്രി ) Third. തൃതീയ (gramm.) The dative case; (astr.) the third day of the lunar fortnight. A small obelisk (Phallos?) of ചേടിമണ്‍, placed on the ചൂത്തറ of each house (10 days for Ōṇam & 2 for Maγam) in commemoration, it is said, of the great prosperity under king Mahābali.

A worm, grub, mite, vu. പുശു — Kinds: ഓല —, കുട —, കന്പിളി —, അരി —, തേക്കന്‍ —, തൊപ്പപ്പുഴു etc. 2. silk- worm (പട്ടുപു.). 3. see പുഴുകു. I. പുഴുക്ക, ത്തു T. M. C. (huḷu, C. Te. pučču, Tu. puringu) To be eaten or infected by worms, putrify, rot കാലും കയ്യും പുഴുത്ത ദുര്‍ഗ്ഗ ന്ധവും SiPu. (of leprosy). അരിഞ്ഞു കളഞ്ഞു കാച്ചൂതും ചെയ്ക എന്നാല്‍ പു. യില്ല a. med. (cancer). പുഴുത്തു പോക; പുഴുത്ത (vu. പുയി ത്തി) നായി vu. No. (abuse) etc. VN. പുഴുപ്പു being worm-eaten; rottenness. പുഴുക്കടി a skin-disease, chiefly one produced by the first rains, വിഷവെള്ളത്താലേ കാ ല്ക്ക പുണ്ണുണ്ടാകുന്ന പു.; also ringworm കുള ന്പില്‍ പു. കടിച്ചു TP. of a bull, see തല ച്ചൊറി 394. പുഴുക്കടിക്കായി fruit of an Asclepias, employed to counteract it. പുഴുക്കരണം a time in each fortnight, unfavorable to sowing (astrol.) പുഴുക്കുത്തു canker, the damage trees suffer from worms, caterpillars, etc. പുഴുക്കുത്തുക, പുഴക്കേടു. പുഴുക്കൂടു a worm's nest, (of പച്ചപ്പുഴ used as bag for പുതുപ്പണം), a cocoon. പുഴുക്കൊത്തി the hoopoe. പുഴുക്കൊല്ലി a vermifuge Justicia nasuta, Rh.
